What Is Clear Bra?

Clear Bra is a nearly invisible film that is made out of extremely durable urethane. It can be applied on top of your car’s paint to protect the finish from road debris like sand, gravel, and other forms of detritus that would otherwise cause unsightly, permanent damage to your vehicle’s exterior.“Clear Bra” is the brand name of one of the most common kinds of paint protection films, but colloquially, it goes by several names. It can also be referred to as:

  • Clear mask
  • Invisible shield
  • Clear wrap
  • Car scratch protective film
  • Rock chip protection
  • Paint protection film

The most common two terms used throughout the industry are Clear Bra and paint protection film, so we will use them interchangeably here.

How Does Paint Protection Film Work?

Paint protection film keeps your car looking better for longer by providing a durable defense for its finish. The secret is in the compound.Urethane film:

  1. Is high-impact resistant: it can defend your paint from small chips and scratches caused by errant rocks or other road debris.
  2. Is resistant to acidic contaminants and corrosion: it will help to prevent etching and chemical stains on your paint caused by bird droppings, bug splatters, acidic rain, and mineral deposits.
  3. Does not oxidize in the sun: it will help to prevent your paint from fading caused by the sun’s UV rays.
  4. Can heal itself: the top layer of a high-quality paint protection film is made of elastomeric polymers that can return to their natural shape after being crumpled, stretched, or otherwise disfigured. This means that the film can absorb the damage of light scratches and return to its initial texture and appearance on its own.

Of course, Clear Bra has its limits. It’s not going to make your car bulletproof, and it’s not a cure-all solution to keeping your car’s finish safe. Some rocks will puncture paint protection film, and bird droppings and bug splatter will damage it if allowed to sit on it for long enough. You will still have to wash your car.

However, paint protection film is your ally for fighting back against exterior damage. It can be a great tool for keeping your car looking shiny and new for years to come!

What Are the Benefits of Paint Protection Film?

  • Cheaper than having to repaint
  • Boasts a clear, glossy appearance
  • Invisible finish allows your paint to shine through
  • Prevents acidic rain and mineral deposits from damaging the paint
  • Stops chemical stains and etching from bug splatter and bird droppings
  • Protects against scratches and chips caused by rocks and road debris
  • Resistant to harmful UV rays to preserve the color and clarity of your finish
  • Custom-cut for your vehicle’s year, make, and model
  • Keeps your car looking great for years to come!

How Long Does Clear Bra Last?

Clear Bra is a semi-permanent installation that can be easily removed and replaced at any time. The average lifespan of a quality paint protection film that has been applied by qualified technicians is 7 to 10 years.

Can Paint Protection Film Be Removed?

Yes! A team of trained professionals (like the team at Ultimate Finish) can easily remove and replace paint protection film without damaging your car.

Will Clear Bra Change the Appearance of My Car?

Not really — at least, not for the worse! Clear Bra is designed to be virtually transparent, stain-resistant, and fade-resistant. It will not change the color of your car, and it will offer superior finish protection for many years to come.Depending on the parts of your car you would like it applied to, you may be able to see a very faint line or seam where the edge of the film is, but if you are concerned about this, you can contact us to discuss options with our Clear Bra installers.

What Parts of My Car Should Have Paint Protection Film?

Where there is paint, there is paint protection film — and sometimes even in places where there isn’t paint!Clear Bra can be applied to protect your vehicle’s:

  • Hood
  • Bumper
  • Fenders
  • Headlights
  • Fog lights
  • Mirrors
  • Door handles
  • A-pillars
  • And nearly any other surface at risk for cosmetic damage

Of course, you don’t have to cover your car completely. Choosing the appropriate amount of protection for you mostly depends on your driving habits. You may want more thorough coverage if you have long commutes in wintertime or regularly drive on dirt roads. You likely don’t need as much protection for a car that sits in the garage most of the time and just makes runs to the grocery store and back a few times a month.

Does Paint Protection Film Turn Yellow Over Time?

You may have seen or heard of Clear Bras that begin to yellow over time. If you’re worried about this happening to your car, you shouldn’t be. Why? The short answer is that this used to be a problem, but it isn’t any longer, thanks to advances in paint protection film technology and specifically in the way it is adhered to the vehicle’s surface. The long answer: when Clear Bras first came onto the scene for consumer automobiles, drivers began to complain that theirs had yellowed over time and ruined the look of their car, completely defeating the purpose of having paint protection film installed in the first place.

Paint protection film manufacturers began researching what was going on, and they discovered that the yellowing effect was due to the specific adhesive that was being used to bind the film to the bodies of cars. Although the film itself did not oxidize when exposed to UV rays, the adhesive did, and over time this led to ugly discoloration.

Manufacturers jumped to research alternative adhesives, and began to use the acrylic adhesives that are found on most Clear Bras today. These are UV-resistant, meaning they will not oxidize or discolor.

You only need to be concerned about the possibility of discoloration if you opt for a cheaper, sub-standard film, or use questionable aftermarket products. However, partnering with a reputable team like ours at Ultimate Finish guarantees this will not be a problem!

What’s The Risk Of My Clear Bra Blistering or Peeling?

Like discoloration, issues of blistering and peeling mostly arise from unprofessional or sloppy application.Blistering, or tiny air bubbles popping up beneath the film, generally happens because a contaminant has been trapped underneath, creating a separation between the film and the body of the car. In a proper, professional clear bra application, the risk of this happening is minimal. That’s because the surface of the vehicle goes through a rigorous washing, claying, and polishing process to eliminate any contaminants before film ever touches paint.

Peeling, which happens when the edges of the film begin to peel away from the paint, can happen because of poor application, but it is just as often the result of improper care. Specifically, if you use a pressure washer to clean your car, then you need to make sure to stay at least a foot away from the film, especially any exposed edges or seams.

How Can I Maintain My Car’s Clear Bra?

Paint protection film tends to be very durable and easy to maintain, requiring very little care outside of normal washing. However, we have a few tips on responsible Clear Bra maintenance:After application, you should wait at least one week before washing your vehicle. After that, wash as you normally would!
If you like to use a pressure washer or compressed air, just be sure to keep the nozzle at least 12 inches from the edge of the film to prevent it from peeling.
Avoid wiping or cleaning the film in direct sunlight.
Do not use a powered buffer on the film.
If the paint protection film you’ve selected is not covered with a Ceramic Coating, then you should regularly apply a sealant or high-quality wax for maximum protection.
